WHAT WE DO
We are shifting NY State’s energy dependency from a utility-controlled, fossil fuel model to a municipally-controlled clean, renewable energy model for thousands of households at a time. By designing and implementing community choice aggregation programs, we empower municipalities to make energy decisions for their own communities thereby enabling local decision-making and transferring control away from the State.
We negotiate, on behalf of municipalities, for renewable electricity supply and better electricity supply contract terms that protect consumers. We also provide access to community solar.
HOW WE DO IT
Through innovative and groundbreaking community choice renewable energy programs, we empower municipalities across NY State to leverage the collective bargaining power of their residents and small businesses to provide them access to affordable clean energy on their own terms, delivering benefits to individuals, entire communities, and our environment.
Since our first program launched in July 2019, more than 80,000 residents and small businesses have chosen 100% renewable electricity at a competitive fixed price.

CHOICE: The municipality selects its default energy offering, shifting control away from the State to the local authority.

PRICE STABILITY: No monthly price fluctuations.
CONSUMER PROTECTION: Fully vetted contracts held at the municipal level. Implementation plans are approved by the NY State Department of Public Service.

WHAT IS COMMUNITY POWER?
Community Power is a concept and “toolbox” that puts energy decision-making authority in the hands of communities rather than the state, transferring power to enable local autonomy. Community Power ensures that even the smallest communities are equipped with the legislative framework and tools to become active leaders in the transition away from fossil fuels in favor of clean energy. The tools currently offered by Joule Community Power are community choice electricity supply and community solar.
